Electrics in rural New Forest homes

Forest homes present challenges that you seldom find in a city street. Many properties are older cottages or farmhouses with long supply runs, and some rely on overhead lines. They often have a different earthing arrangement, known as TT, which depends on a local earth rod and needs testing to make sure it still gives proper protection.

Outbuildings add another layer. Stables, barns, workshops and garden rooms can sit a long way from the house, and each needs a correctly sized and protected supply. Damp, livestock and rodents can all damage cable that was never meant for those conditions, so it is worth having older outbuilding wiring tested.

Period and thatched homes

Parts of the Forest are in conservation areas, and many homes are listed or thatched. Check with the New Forest National Park Authority or New Forest District Council whether you need consent, and tell us about any restrictions when you get in touch. Thatched roofs need particular care with cable routes and lighting in the roof space, and your insurer may have conditions of its own.

What we can help with in the New Forest

EV chargers for Forest homes

Electric cars suit rural life if you can charge at home, particularly where public chargers are few and far between. Long drives can make for a tidy installation, but the cable run and your earthing setup both matter, so we check them before we give you a price. A smart charger lets you top up overnight, ready for the next morning.

Holiday lets, pubs and Forest businesses

Tourism is a big part of the local economy, and guests expect everything to work. Our commercial electricians for the New Forest support pubs, cafes, shops and accommodation in Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst and Lymington with repairs, lighting, emergency lighting and fixed wire testing. PAT testing in the New Forest keeps guest appliances checked and gives you a record for your insurer. On the Waterside, we also cover Hythe, Dibden and Fawley.

Hythe and the Waterside

Hythe, Dibden Purlieu and Fawley have a different feel from the open Forest, with more estates and family homes. Here the requests are closer to what you would expect in a town: consumer unit upgrades, extra sockets, outside lights and EV chargers. Close to Southampton Water, outdoor fittings should be chosen to cope with the damp, salty air, and existing ones are worth checking for corrosion.

Lymington, Brockenhurst and Ringwood

Each of the Forest's towns has its share of older homes and independent businesses. In Lymington, many properties sit close to the sea and the river. In Brockenhurst and Lyndhurst, older cottages and guest accommodation are common. In Ringwood, the mix runs from the market town centre to newer estates and trading units. We will ask what your property is like before we visit, so we can plan properly.

Second homes and empty properties

If a home sits empty for part of the year, it is worth having the electrics inspected more carefully, particularly if it has been damp or has had mice in the roof. We can also talk through outdoor lighting, or circuits that are safe to leave on while you are away, such as heating and frost protection. Give us a call and tell us how you use the property.

Dushi Electrical was very professional and friendly. He came on time and on a Saturday which was really great as my whole bathroom light and fittings needed replacing so I could safely shower. I have used Dushi Electrical a couple of times and they have been consistantly great. I would recommend them to anyone.

I was very impressed with the level of service and courtesy of Lorenc when I contacted him regarding a small job on my Consumer Unit. He responded swiftly, kept me informed, turned up on time and did a neat and tidy job for a reasonable cost. I would happily use him again.

I’m very happy with the service provided by the two workers who came to my shop a few days ago for a routine inspection. Both were professional, friendly, and polite. They carried out the checks carefully and efficiently, and everything went smoothly. Great service from both of them. Highly recommended!

Common questions

What is TT earthing, and do I have it?

TT earthing uses a local earth rod rather than one provided by the network, and it is common in rural homes. An inspection will confirm what you have and whether it is working properly.

Do holiday lets need electrical testing?

Owners have a duty to keep guests safe, and insurers often expect evidence. An EICR and PAT testing are the usual ways to show you have checked the electrics.

How far into the New Forest do you travel?

We cover Hythe, Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst, Lymington, Ringwood and the villages around them. If you are not sure about your postcode, just call.
